Updated

Peppermint bark is the simplest homemade holiday candy: two layers of melted chocolate and a shower of crushed candy canes.

Use good chocolate bars rather than chips for the smoothest, snappiest bark.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 12 ounces white chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 3/4 cup crushed candy canes or peppermint candies (about 8 candy canes)

Instructions

  1. Line the pan. Line a sheet pan with parchment.
  2. Dark layer. Melt the dark chocolate in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring, until smooth. Spread in a thin layer about 9 x 12 inches. Chill 15 minutes, until set.
  3. White layer. Melt the white chocolate the same way, in shorter bursts, and stir in the peppermint extract. Spread over the dark layer.
  4. Top. Sprinkle with the crushed candy canes and press lightly.
  5. Chill and break. Chill 30 minutes, until firm, then break into pieces.

Tips

  • Keeps 2 weeks in an airtight container in a cool place.
  • Crush the candy canes in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin.

Questions about this recipe

Why did my layers separate?
The bottom layer was too cold and hard. Add the white chocolate when the dark is set but not fully chilled.
Can I use chocolate chips?
Yes, though bars melt smoother.
