A creamy, tangy Russian dressing of Miracle Whip or mayonnaise, chili sauce, white vinegar, Worcestershire and garlic powder, thinned with water. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.

This Russian dressing comes from the recipe book of Sandra Mills, where it heads the salad dressing section. It is a pantry recipe: salad dressing or mayonnaise, chili sauce, a spoonful of white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder, stirred together and thinned with a little water.

It is the classic dressing for a wedge or chopped salad and the sauce for a Reuben sandwich, and it makes a good dip for shrimp or crudites.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Miracle Whip Salad Dressing or the mayonnaise of your choice
  • 1/2 cup Bennet's Chili Sauce or other brand if you choose
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Water to thin to desired consistency

Instructions

  1. Combine. In a bowl, combine the salad dressing or mayonnaise, chili sauce, white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder.
  2. Mix well. Mix well until smooth and evenly colored.
  3. Thin. Stir in water a teaspoon at a time until the dressing reaches the consistency you like.
  4. Refrigerate. Cover and refrigerate until serving.

Tips

  • Miracle Whip gives a sweeter, tangier dressing; mayonnaise gives a richer, milder one.
  • Chili sauce is the ketchup-like condiment sold near the ketchup, not Asian chili sauce.
  • The dressing thickens as it chills. Stir in a little more water before serving if needed.

Both are mayonnaise-based. Russian dressing is spicier and built on chili sauce; Thousand Island is usually sweeter and includes sweet pickle relish.
