Seven layer bars, sometimes called magic bars, are built right in the pan with no mixing at all: melted margarine, graham cracker crumbs, coconut, chocolate chips and butterscotch chips, sweetened condensed milk drizzled over and chopped walnuts on top. They bake into rich, chewy squares.

Ingredients

  • 1 stick margarine or butter
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 6 ounces chocolate chips
  • 6 ounces butterscotch chips
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Melt. Place the margarine in a 9 x 9-inch pan and melt it in a 350°F oven. Remove when melted.
  2. Layer. Sprinkle the graham cracker crumbs over the margarine. Then add, in order, the coconut, chocolate chips and butterscotch chips. Do not mix.
  3. Top. Drizzle the condensed milk over the top and cover with the walnuts.
  4. Bake. Bake for 35 minutes at 350°F. Cool in the pan before cutting into 1-inch squares.

Tips

  • Cool completely, or chill, for clean cuts.
