Barbecue-glazed beef patties with roasted potatoes

Barbecued Beefies are small, tender beef patties made like a mini meatloaf, with oats and milk to keep them moist. They bake in a single layer, smothered in a homemade barbecue sauce, until the sauce is thick and the patties are cooked through.

The sauce is simple: lots of chopped onion simmered with ketchup, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder and paprika. Serve the patties with mashed potatoes, on buns, or with a green vegetable.

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce. In a saucepan, mix the onions, ketchup, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder and paprika. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring now and then. Make the patties while it simmers.
  2. Heat the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Mix the patties. In a bowl, mix the ground beef, milk, oats, grated onion, salt, pepper and chili powder until evenly combined. Let stand for 5 minutes so the oats absorb the milk.
  4. Shape. Shape the mixture into 16 patties and arrange them in an ungreased 13 by 9 by 2-inch baking pan.
  5. Sauce and bake. Pour the barbecue sauce over the patties. Bake uncovered for 1 hour, until the patties are cooked through (160°F in the center) and the sauce is thick.
  6. Serve. Serve hot with the sauce spooned over.
