Updated

This is the green bean casserole most families grew up with: canned soup, milk, a splash of soy sauce and a can of crispy fried onions. It comes together in ten minutes and is on nearly every Thanksgiving table.

Ingredients

  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups cooked cut green beans (two 14.5 ounce cans, drained, or 1 1/2 pounds fresh, blanched)
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix. In a 1 1/2-quart baking dish, stir together the soup, milk, soy sauce and pepper. Stir in the green beans and 2/3 cup of the fried onions.
  3. Bake. Bake 25 minutes, until hot and bubbling.
  4. Top and finish. Stir, sprinkle with the remaining 2/3 cup fried onions, and bake 5 minutes more, until the onions are golden.

Questions about this recipe

Can I use frozen green beans?
Yes. Thaw and drain 1 1/2 pounds of frozen cut green beans first.
Why add the onions in two parts?
Some go inside for flavor; the rest go on at the end so they stay crisp.
