Updated

A pot of mulled cider makes the whole house smell like the holidays. It is easy to keep warm in a slow cooker so guests can help themselves.

Add a splash of rum or brandy to individual mugs for an adult version.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups (1/2 gallon) apple cider
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 4 allspice berries
  • 2 slices fresh ginger (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine. Put the cider, orange slices, cinnamon, cloves, allspice and ginger in a large pot.
  2. Warm. Bring just to a simmer, then lower the heat and keep it below a simmer 20 to 30 minutes so the spices infuse. Do not boil.
  3. Sweeten and serve. Stir in brown sugar to taste, strain or ladle around the spices, and serve hot with a cinnamon stick.

Tips

  • Slow cooker: combine everything and heat on low 2 to 3 hours, then keep on warm.
  • Stick the cloves into the orange slices so they are easy to lift out.
